Turning things the Right way up

Those of us who like to think we are designer thinkers, often refer to the current "system" and that we need to turn it on its head.

But we don't need to - things are already on their head. Our job is to turn them the right way up . . .

By even suggesting that we want to turn things on their head gives credance to the current way of working; it sounds dangerous and risky to turn things upsidedown.

It also risks giving the impression that just doing it different is enough, that we simply think the current way is wrong - whereas turning things "the right way up" hopefully gives our audiences the more accurate impression that we have a positive constructive solution.

Quite so Cameron.

My current obsession is the upside down nature of public service commissioning, especially in the current policy context of Localism, Big Society, Community Empowerment and all that.

I do understand that the legal framework is unhelpful and favours the corporate sector, who have the resources to respond to mountains of paperwork as well as the legal teams to challenge any perceived mistakes in process (the fear of which is the main concern of many commissioners).

What the corporates lack, is soul. This is not a problem if we are purchasing baked beans; services for human beans is a different matter however.

So, how to commission soul or we might say love or compassion?

Well starting with a weighty top down Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, followed by a service specification written by a committee of "experts" and a process laden with bureaucracy does not seem to be working....

The alternative? Well, we have some ideas about that, as well as a working model......
