There's no need for any comment on this one

From BBC Wiltshire today:

"A pensioner has been told she must stop tending a public flower bed unless she agrees to wear a fluorescent jacket, put up warning signs and use a lookout.
June Turnbull, 79, of Urchfront near Devizes, has nurtured the blooms on the plot for eight years.

But now she is being told to obey health and safety rules after being spotted by a county council official.

Mrs Turnbull said: "They can send me to jail if they like - I just want to be left alone to do it."

Can't resist the challenge in the title.....

On the face of it, this is a great example of commonsense being squashed by bureaucracy.
The world of blame culture, "where there is blame there's a claim" and so on is full of such bizarre stories.

The thing about commonsense, though, is that it is not as common as you might think.

Going back to the story of the council official telling the old lady to comply with health and safety procedures, from the point of view of the official, if anything happened to the old lady, he could take the blame, especially once he is aware of the issue.
His commonsense tells him to do his job and cover his back.

The challenge is to change the culture away from blame to recognising that accidents happen and that life without risk is not worth living.

That looks like a service design and animation job!
